Improves Skin Health
Citric acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid. AHAs are chemical exfoliators commonly added to skin care products to help peel away dead skin cells, revealing fresh new skin.

Protects Against Kidney Stones
Citric acid, as potassium citrate, can often treat or prevent chronic kidney stones. It helps increase urine citrate to avoid calcium stones and decrease urine acidity, preventing uric acid and cystine stones.

Increases Nutrient Absorption
Citric acid is often added to minerals to help improve their absorption. Magnesium citrate is made by combining citric acid with magnesium oxide. Studies have found magnesium citrate is absorbed better than magnesium oxide and magnesium chelate.

Protects Against Inflammation
Naturally occurring citric acid is an antioxidant. This means it can help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants also help protect against inflammation and signs of aging.

Improves Endodontic Treatments
A review in vitro studies and two randomized controlled trials found citric acid was effective at cleaning and disinfecting root canal walls when combined with manual digital activation (MDA). The review also concluded citric acid is beneficial in regenerative endodontic procedures (replacing damaged pulp tissue with viable tissue to restore normal function).

Application of Citric Acid

The food industry
Citric acid is often added to packaged food and drinks. It helps keep canned and jarred foods fresh over long periods of time. It can prevent some kinds of fresh-cut produce, like sliced apples, from turning brown. Citric acid can also help thicken foods or give them a slightly sour flavor. That's why you might see citric acid listed as an ingredient in some ice creams, sorbets, or sodas.

Alcohol
Citric acid can balance out the acid in a food or drink. Winemakers sometimes add it to their products to improve the taste.

Medicines
Some creams include citric acid to help clear up skin infections. Other citric acid drugs that you take by mouth can lower the amount of acid in your urine. This can help prevent kidney stones.
Some people take calcium citrate supplements, which can help prevent kidney stones.

Personal care products
When manufacturers mix citric acid with other ingredients, they can form a compound called "alpha hydroxy acid" that helps smooth your skin. It's also in some cosmetics and toiletries -- like lipstick, hair spray, and deodorant -- to help them last longer.

Household cleaners
Because citric acid can eat away at hard water buildup, you'll often see it in dishwasher detergent. Other household cleaners also include it as an ingredient since it can help remove stains and odors.

Disinfectants
Since citric acid kills some types of bacteria and viruses, you'll find it in insect sprays, products that kill fungus or algae, hand sanitizer, and even some tissues you use to blow your nose.

Environmental cleanup products
Citric acid can safely remove toxins from polluted soil and even clean up nuclear waste.

Industrial Citric Acid Production Approach

Surface Culture

Surface culture is divided into solids and liquids, though the liquid approach provides higher economic production. The culture medium is put on a shallow aluminium tray 5-20 cm deep and maintained at 5-6 pH. Uniform air circulation and maintenance of temperature and humidity are ensured in the fermentation chamber.

Media Preparation

For CA production, the medium must contain a carbon source such as sucrose and inorganic salts. Sucrose and beet molasses are preferred carbon sources for CA fermentation media. To achieve a high CA yield, a culture medium with less than 15% sucrose is beneficial.

Fermentation

The prepared media of 1 to 2.5 cm thick is placed in a shallow pan. The inoculum spores are spread onto the medium surface with uniform aeration to allow even distribution of spores in the media. Incubation is done at 30-40 degree celsius temperature. The temperature is held constant during fermentation with air current ventilation to allow efficient gaseous exchange.

Citric Acid Transportation Regulations

Citric acid, a widely used organic acid in various industries, is generally considered safe for transportation under standard conditions. It is not classified as a hazardous material, eliminating the need for stringent shipping regulations typically associated with dangerous goods. To ensure its quality and effectiveness, it is essential to follow proper storage guidelines, which help maintain its stability and prevent contamination.

Citric acid is listed in “Storage class: Combustible solids”. So, keep away from heat. It should be stored in a dry place at room temperature (10 °C – 30 °C) away from direct sunlight in tightly closed container.

FAQ

Q: Is citric acid toxic or nontoxic?

A: The widespread presence of citric acid in the animal and plant kingdoms is an assurance of its nontoxic nature.

Q: What should you not use citric acid for?

A: It's advised that not using citric acid-based cleaners on the following surfaces: Marble: Citric acid can damage marble, stone, and granite surfaces by reacting with minerals in these products, potentially causing corrosion over time.

Q: Where do you find citric acid?

A: Citric acid is an important natural compound that has been known since the late 18th century. It has since been found in other citrus fruits, pineapples, and even animal tissues.

Q: Can I mix citric acid and vinegar?

A: Yes, you can mix citric acid and vinegar, but it might be unnecessary. They both contain acids, but citric acid is more effective at dealing with limescale.
